The Basic Framework for Family Discipleship

FAMILY DISCIPLESHIP MODELING

Serving as a godly example for your family, living out your genuine walk with God and demonstrating true repentance where and when you fall short. There are two key components to Family Discipleship Modeling. A godly role model needs to be reliable and relatable. Be Reliable: Have repentant integrity. Be Relatable: Have relational proximity.

CHARGE: WORK ON YOUR RELATIONSHIP.

Grow in your knowledge of each child. How do they work, how do they play, what are they like, and what do they like. Be compassionate and sensitive to their individual needs. Be intentional in how you care.

FAMILY DISCIPLESHIP TIME

Creating intentional time built into the rhythm of the family's life for the purpose of thinking about, talking about, and living out the gospel. There are two key components to Family Discipleship Time. Rhythm: Be steady, designating the times with commitment and consistency. Intentionality: Be studied, designing the times with planning and purpose.

CHARGE: WORK ON YOUR RHYTHM.

Skipping one day leads to two and two leads to three. Let’s be consistent and committed.

FAMILY DISCIPLESHIP MOMENTS

Capturing and leveraging opportunities in the course of everyday life for the purpose of gospel-centered conversations. There are two key components to Family Discipleship Moments. These are the two main things we are trying to communicate and teach in family discipleship moments – the characteristics of God and godly character. Characteristics of God: To know God. (Who is God? What has He done? What is He doing? What is He like?) Godly Character: To grow in godliness. (Who am I? Who has God called me to be? What has He asked of me? How can I become more like Him?)

CHARGE: WORK ON YOUR RESPONSES.

Be ready to capture a moment and have a great conversation because you are ready to respond to your circumstances with grace and insight.

FAMILY DISCIPLESHIP MILESTONES

Marking and making occasions to celebrate and commemorate significant spiritual milestones of God's work in the life of the family and child. There are two kinds of family discipleship milestones. Some milestones we make, and some milestones we mark. Making: Creating significant milestones to commemorate, celebrate, or commend spiritual growth. Marking: Appreciating God and his unpredictable work as you recognize it in your family.

CHARGE: WORK ON YOUR RITES.

Make a plan for how you will recognize the milestones of age and development in your child.

YOU CAN DO IT!

We all feel discouraged about our parenting sometimes. Maybe especially about our spiritual leadership.

The book of Deuteronomy is Moses’ long speech of instruction and encouragement to a new generation of Israelites. In Deuteronomy 6:4-9 he gives them a command that Jesus called the greatest in the entire bible – love God with everything you’ve got!

Right after that, he tells them to diligently teach their kids to love and obey their God too . He commands the parents to teach the next generation about God all the time and everywhere they go.

At the end of his speech, chapter 30:11-14, Moses tells them that this is “NOT TOO HARD” for them! In the English Standard Version of verse 14 Moses says to this huge crowd (including lots of parents), “YOU CAN DO IT!”

Not that anyone of us is sufficient or perfect. We are all struggling and stumbling through this parenthood journey. In fact, if the salvation of our kids came down to the quality of our parenting, we’d never see another child saved. We are all imperfect parents.

But we have the help of a perfect God!

We plant seeds of the gospel. We water them often. But it is God who gives the growth!

And since God is with you, since he loves your kids, since he gives you his church to help you, since he equips you for obedience, since you can cast all your burdens onto him, since you can be forgiven for your mistakes – YOU CAN DO THIS!
